As a Project Manager in the Communications, Media and Entertainment Solutions group for the past six years, I’ve led a variety of projects across telecommunications, cloud management and Digital Ecosystem Management. Working with market leading telecommunications clients to deliver new and innovative solutions to tackle real business problems is both challenging and rewarding. Luckily, at BearingPoint, I have always worked with energetic and ambitious teams of developers, product owners and testers. Sharing our client’s vision and enjoying the intensity and flexibility of iterative agile development is key to achieving successful outcomes.
Every day starts with a stand-up. It’s a great opportunity for the team to get together to checkpoint progress and identify obstacles that need to be removed. The stand-up is run by the scrum team for the scrum team. As Project Manager, I’m an observer rather than a vocal participant. As the day progresses, I move from meeting to meeting with clients, product owners and work-stream leads. I see it as my key function to ensure that we are all aligned and informed. This ensures that we are all pulling in one direction towards a shared goal.
Outside the Office
When I’m not at work, I spend most of my time outdoors. Running, cycling and sailing keep me fit and help me unwind from busy days in the office. I also love to travel and recently spent a month in Argentina and Chile while on a break between projects.
For me, it’s all about the people. Our managing director knows everyone’s name and that atmosphere of collegiality permeates the organisation. It’s also about the diversity. Our project teams are made up of people from different competencies who all bring something different and complimentary to the table. As Diversity Champion, I founded the BearingPoint Women’s Affinity Network last year. It’s a forum for female and male colleagues to come together and discuss the challenges as well as the opportunities for women in IT. The Affinity Network recognises that one of the key challenges facing our sector is building a pipeline of new female talent. To address this challenge, we are piloting a schools outreach programme in conjunction with the Drumcondra Education Centre and the Dublin West Education Centre. This programme aims to introduce primary school girls to coding and to inspire them towards careers in IT. This experience has been as rewarding as delivering a high profile project to a client. It is this rounded experience, which makes BearingPoint such a great place to work.
